Health Safety & Environment

The United Steelworkers believe that their members health, safety and work environment is paramount. It is also a cornerstone to our collective agreement and is given a considerable amount of focus and weight during the negotiation process and everyday interactions in the workplace.

Local 6166 is unique in that it has bargained 9 full time worker safety representatives over a period of collective agreements to overlook the health safety and working environment for all of the members working for Vale.

The full time worker safety reps were first negotiated in the 1993 collective bargaining agreement and started with 3 worker safety reps. One rep for surface operations, one rep for underground, and the other for miscellaneous. In 2002 there were more positions added bringing the total to 7. I have been employed with Vale since October of 1987. I have been in the role of Worker Safety Representative since June 2006 and active as a Steward since 1992. Read more >>>
