Grievance Committee

The process and the committee members

A grievance is a wrong or hardship suffered, which is the grounds of a complaint. The collective agreement outlines the grievance process which involves the grievor and their Union representatives on the floor up to a certain point.

If there is no resolve that is satisfactory to the grivor and it is recommended to be advanced further by the stewards representing the grievor, the Grievance Committee then reviews all the information provided throughout the process by the Grievance committee chair.

The Committee Chair will review and explain to the committee members at a regular monthly meeting, the details of the case and then the committee will individually vote based on the merits of the case to either advance the case to Arbitration or discontinue pursuing the case any further. The merits include violations of the CBA or legislation regarding employment standards, human rights or safety and health.

If it has been decided by the committe to pursue the case further, the Grievance chair will forward that decision to the conflict resolution coordinator to prepare the case for arbitration. (The Union and the company also have a mediation process they can both agree to utilizing which is an intermediate step to try and resolve the issue prior to arbitration. This involves having a provincial mediator try to reach a resolve agreeable to both parties.)

If it has been decided by the committee to discontinue pursuing the case further the Grievor will be sent a notification via mail of such decision. The Grievor has a right to appeal the decision of the Grievance committee within a specified time frame. Those details will be specified in that notification.

The Grivance committee consists of 9 members (including the conflict resolution coordinator).
